Working hours, overtime and Ramadan hours in Qatar payroll

Overtime disputes are the most common payroll complaint in Qatar companies, and most trace back to attendance rules configured loosely. This guide sets out the hours, the overtime treatment and the Ramadan rules the HR system has to hold.

The rules the system holds

The Labour Law sets the standard working day and week, reduced hours for Muslim employees during Ramadan, weekly rest, and overtime paid at a premium over the basic hourly wage for hours beyond the standard and on rest days and holidays. Contracts and policies define shifts, rotations and site allowances on top. The HR system needs shift patterns with effective dates, Ramadan schedules that switch on and off automatically, overtime rules that calculate from approved attendance, and payroll that reads the result.

Configured in Zoho People, Odoo and ERPNext with biometric attendance. Rates and limits are described generally; confirm current provisions with your advisers.

Configuration checklist

ItemWhat to configure
Shift patternsStandard, rotating and site shifts with effective dates
Ramadan hoursReduced schedule applied to eligible employees automatically by date
Weekly restRest day per shift; work on rest days flagged as overtime
OvertimePremium over basic hourly wage; approval before payment; caps if policy sets them
HolidaysEid and National Day in the calendar; holiday work treated per law
AttendanceDevice punches, grace periods, late and early-leave rules, manager approval of exceptions

Common mistakes

  • Overtime calculated on total pay instead of the basic wage the rule specifies.
  • Ramadan hours applied manually and forgotten for some sites.
  • Rest-day work paid as ordinary overtime.
  • Exceptions approved after payroll, causing corrections next month.

Payroll

Approved overtime and deductions flow into payroll components that are classified correctly for GRSIA and end-of-service. See the payroll setup guide.
