Customising ERPNext without breaking the upgrade path

ERPNext is built on Frappe, a framework designed for exactly this: adding document types, fields, scripts and workflows through a custom app that sits beside the core rather than inside it. Done properly, customisation is what makes ERPNext fit a Qatari contractor's progress billing, a distributor's landed-cost rules or a manufacturer's batch traceability. Done badly, it is what makes the next version upgrade impossible.

Our approach is configuration first, because ERPNext's customise-form, property setters and workflow builder cover a great deal without code. Where code is needed, we write it in a versioned Frappe app with server scripts, client scripts, custom reports and scheduled jobs, tested against the version you run and adapted at each upgrade. Print formats are built in Arabic and English with real data, because bilingual layouts are where most ERPNext installations in Qatar look unfinished.
